Maldives are home to plenty of sandbanks – large and small. While they are often not possible to reach on your own, the majority of the resorts in the Maldives offer a private sandbank picnic Maldives style, or even a dinner. Our picnic was organized by Fushifaru, a beautiful 5-star resort that opened its doors in October 2017.
Fushifaru Maldives sits between two channels that connect the inner lagoon to the vast Indian Ocean. The island earned its reputation as an extraordinary underwater world, which now also boasts with 49 beautifully designed luxury villas. Fushifaru is also only a 5-minute boat ride away from a beautiful sandbank. In this article, you’ll be able to find out everything you know about booking a private sandbank experience.
Booking & Price
You can book a private sandbank experience directly at the resort you’re staying at. At Fushifaru they have a very convenient way of communicating with their guests – via WhatsApp. I booked this experience as a surprise for my boyfriend Mikael, so I really appreciated that I could keep it a secret and not need to worry about sneaking away to the reception or make calls from the villa.
The private sandbank experience is not as costly as it may appear, but it will depend on the perks you want. I paid around $120 USD for an afternoon (approximately 3 hours) at the sandbank. This price included picnic style food, bottle of wine and transport. Bear in mind that champagne is more expensive and will set you back for at least $95 USD (plus taxes) for a big bottle.
How to get to the sandbank
We went to the reception of our resort and once our boat ride arrived, we boarded. After a 5 minute ride from the main island, we made it to our very own private sandbank. We really couldn’t believe our eyes at how magical it was. Nothing but the waves hitting the soft sand and the sun shining over our heads. We took the drone out to take some shots while we waited for the food to arrive. And the food arrived in style! The little boat dropped off wine, food, water and some sweet baked goods. A perfect basket of goodies for a romantic private sandbank picnic in the Maldives.
Eat, beach, sleep, repeat.
What to do at the sandbank
Well, besides eating and drinking your heart out, there are plenty of things you can do with your time on the sandbank. We took lots of photos, swam, strolled around and swung in the hammock. Time will definitely fly by while you’re enjoying this experience, so make sure you make the most of it by just being there and relaxing. Fushifaru has two different booking options for the sandbank, morning and afternoon. I decided to book the afternoon slot, so we could watch the sunset here.
We watched the sky change colors from orange to pink and all the way to purple. Booking the private sandbank picnic was a dream come true and a truly unique way to experience the Maldives.
