Sticky skin, dripping sweat, damp clothes, overheating, and fatigue—these are the realities of a summer in Europe. Despite this, a summer trip to Europe remains one of the most romanticized vacations, attracting more tourists than ever before. When the European summer heat becomes unbearable, the idea of a ‘coolcation’—a vacation to cooler, more temperate destinations—sounds incredibly appealing.
I grew up in Slovenia, where July temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). As a kid, I spent my summers in the shade and still don’t understand why people flock to Central and Southern Europe during the hottest months of the year. Now, living in Sweden, I enjoy cool, bearable, and often incredibly beautiful summers.
If you must travel to Europe during July and August and want to avoid the immense crowds and heat, here are the eight best places for a coolcation in Europe.
1. Faroe Islands
Average temperatures in July and August: 11-13°C (52-55°F).
The Faroe Islands, a group of volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, are known for their rugged cliffs, dramatic seascapes, and charming villages. This remote archipelago, located halfway between Iceland and Norway, is a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage and my favorite coolcation destination in Europe.
The islands are characterized by their stunning, untouched landscapes. Steep cliffs plunge into the deep blue Atlantic, while green, grassy hills stretch as far as the eye can see. The dramatic scenery is complemented by a network of hiking trails that offer breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and serene fjords. Bird watchers will be delighted by the abundant birdlife, including puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes. Faroe Islands are one of my favorite destinations in Europe during July and August as there are no crowds at all!
Cultural experience
The Faroe Islands are dotted with quaint, charming villages that showcase traditional Faroese culture. Tórshavn, the capital, is one of the smallest capitals in the world and features colorful wooden houses, narrow lanes, and a vibrant harbor. The village of Gásadalur, with its iconic Mulafossur Waterfall, is a must-visit for its stunning beauty and tranquil atmosphere.
